Jahnz seeks third term to Lincoln Council
Lincoln Town Council Vice President James
R. Jahnz has announced that he will be a
candidate for re-election to the District
4 (Albion-Lime Rock-Quinnville) Town Council
seat in Lincoln. Jahnz, who is currently
serving his second term on the Town Council,
pointed to his commitment to constituent
services, his focus on open government and
his promotion of the betterment of the district’s
neighborhoods as his main reasons for running
for re-election.
Jahnz stated, “I am fortunate that the
most important part of the office is the
one I truly enjoy the most. That is, acting
as an advocate for the residents of the
district. In so many situations, residents
simply are not sure where or who they can
turn to in government for help. I am honored
to be at the service of my constituents.
It is so important the people of the district
know that their councilperson is there for
them and will stand up for them.”
Jahnz has submitted several pieces of legislation
since being elected that promote and extend
open government which has remained a main
concern of his. “Going back to my first
term, I had made it a priority to return
public comment to Town Council work sessions.
Since then, I have looked to find ways to
make town government more accessible to
residents. This past term, I submitted two
pieces of legislation that further expand
the public’s access to the workings of town
government.”
“The first was an ordinance requiring a
minimum period of time before a final vote
could be taken on any ordinance that had
undergone substantive changes at the committee
level. This allows for those who are following
our agendas on the Internet the opportunity
to see the most recent changes and amendments
to ordinances and resolutions so that the
people will know exactly what the council
is voting on. Another was a resolution I
had submitted recently which makes Council
meetings more accessible to all residents
as they are now being streamed on the Internet
for anyone to view at anytime.”
Jahnz continued, “Also during this term,
I worked to form and actively participate
in a local coalition of elected and appointed
officials working together with town educators
and parents in order to submit a grant application
that will hopefully lead to safer roads
and in increase in safer walking routes
to one of our neighborhood schools.”
Jahnz also was the co-sponsor of legislation
that deals with excessive vehicular noise.
He was credited by his fellow councilman
for providing a workable solution when the
legislation seemed at an impasse. He was
also the sponsor of a recent amendment to
an existing ordinance that resulted in stiffened
penalties for leaving solid waste at the
curbside days prior to municipal pickup.
Jahnz was also a staunch supporter of recent
legislation that created an additional property
tax credit for low income seniors. Jahnz
said, “Now is the time to help our low income
seniors when and where they need it most.
For many those residents, the decision to
stay in their homes can be predicated on
their ability to pay their next tax bill.
The credit provides some relief at a critical
time.”
Jahnz also pointed to the strong leadership
and working relationship demonstrated by
his fellow elected officials which has left
the town, as Jahnz states, “in a uniquely
prepared position to best weather the difficult
economic storm our state currently faces.”
Jahnz serves as Chairman of the Town Council’s
Claims Committee, and serves on the Ordinance
Committee and the Public Safety Committee.
During the previous term he had chaired
the Purchase Committee.
Jahnz concluded, “I have been honored to
serve the residents of District 4 over the
past two terms. I humbly ask them for re-election
to the council as their representative.
Along with the proven track record of an
ability to work with all members of town
government, I am responsive to the resident’s
needs, provide creative and down to earth
solutions when problems arise, and continue
to offer sensible and levelheaded leadership.”
